God’s Own Country has been my favorite tourist destination, right from childhood. Topmost on my bucket list, I always nursed a fascination for the beautiful state and when it was time to take the first independent trip, I zeroed on Thiruvananthapuram or Trivandrum, the charming capital of cool Kerala. Super excited at the prospect of seeing my dream getting fulfilled and with an itchy foot in tow, it became a memorable potpourri of events more so because of the homely home stay that looked after me for 3 days. The cottage, surrounded by long, lush coconut trees and with a leafy courtyard was nothing less than a beautiful sight. The salubrious sea breeze and the pollution-free environment prepare you for the sightseeing in hours and then you are on your way to exploring the gems in the form of:
Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary
Home to the most extensive bouquet of flora and fauna, this sanctuary in Trivandrum is a treat for any wildlife lover. Sprinkled with amazing spots like a Crocodile Farm, Elephant and Deer Rehabilitation Center; it gives you close insights into the life and times of the different species of animals. I lapped up the whole fare, gifting myself with an amazing elephant ride that was like taking an easygoing survey of the enchanting forests.
Puthe Maliga Palace Museum
A perfect jaunt for the history loving souls, this 200-year old museum hosts artifacts and memorabilia of the Travancore dynasty that ruled the state in the olden times. A trip to this majestic palace is like having a tryst with the glorious past. The 1 hour guided tour of the insides and the Chitrali Museum on the outside, were enough to introduce me to the magnificence of the state’s royal times.
Cruise on the Backwaters

home stay, I did not have to go far and got to spend long hours on the boats, absorbing the stillness and the serenity that surrounds the backwaters. Swimming did great wonders to my city-weary body, used to sedentary living. Each muscle and joint got a workout and the aqua adventure felt like manna from heaven. During the entire stay, I enjoyed the sunrises and sunset, around the tranquil backwaters. Experiences beyond expression, they stop your longing for everything.
The Soul-stirring Ayurvedic Massage
Exploring Kerala and missing the massage is just not done and I was very keen to get the experience and what a treat it was? The aromatherapy and the rejuvenating herbal massages gave every cell a new lease of life. It felt like floating on clouds with the angels revitalizing your body with their divine touch.
The Mouth-watering Local Cuisine
The hosts at the homestay served me amazing Kerala cuisine consisting of fish Molee (spicy yellow curry), rice and Payasam (a sweet dish made of semolina in caramelized milk). A glass of fresh toddy (coconut palm wine) formed the perfect dessert end to the delicious dish and the taste lingered in my mouth for days.
The energy and excitement of Trivandrum is certainly something to be experienced firsthand. It will keep you in high spirits for days and you will always look forward to coming here time and again. Try a homestay in Trivandrum, the next time you are here.
