Whenever anyone mentions the pristine North-East, I feel like taking a trip even though I have had my fair share of the seven sisters but Assam still laid unexplored. And when its turn came, I was really excited as I was visiting the only hill station in the state with an equally exquisite name i.e. Haflong. Sprinkled with copious natural wonders, the landscape of this small hilly town holds many treasures and you are offered diverse geographical delights in the form of lakes, waterfalls, hills and lush green forests. I partook in the beauty without any hindrance as my home stay brought every possible comfort to me and made sure I spent my days in joy and revelry. When I landed at the cute railway station, built in a hut like style, I knew the successive journey would floor me with wondrous sights.

Haflong Lake

The prime attraction of the town possesses the grandeur of “Howrah Bridge”, although in a small measure which looked very enigmatic with the tranquil setting. The hanging bridge and the quiet river, flowing leisurely make for a scenic spot that you will love to behold. The clean and well-manicured banks with trees and hilly views give the setting such an ethereal ambience that you just do not want to leave the place. Boating facilities and water sporting activities lend it the perfect adventurous garnishing which I enjoyed a lot.

Haflong Hill

A worthwhile trekking spot, the hill is surrounded with breathtaking views of the pure natural splendor that beckon your soul into soulful trysts and once you set your eyes around, it is difficult to take a step. This is why I took my time climbing the terrain and let my soul wander in between. The restful-yet-exciting trek ended on a spiritual note with my eyes absorbing the entrancing sun going down the hills, in the evening.

Maibang

If you have a thing for old and archaic places then Maibang will definitely appeal to your mind and senses. Currently in ruins, it was once the capital of Dimasa Kachari kingdom. An erstwhile charmer, it still looks fascinating. Desolation and dilapidation seem to have added a mystical magic to the town. The twin monuments of Rasbari- ruins of Kachari Kingdom and Ek Patthar Ghar- the 12th century monolithic temple are completely classic in their own right.

Jatinga

Shrouded in the mystery of birds committing suicides, this village attracts tourist in droves who come here to watch the amazing species of avian. A heaven for bird lovers, Jatinga is nestled in beautiful green hills that you will love to look at and walk around. A footloose to the core, I surveyed around, taking snap shots of the tribal locals and the scenic bounty. Guided by my hosts and egged on by the wanderlust, Jatinga proved every bit to be a gem.

So, when are you coming to this solo hill station of Assam? If you are looking for an exquisite tourist wonder to come under your conquering list then Haflong is a must. You will always cherish it with pride and pleasure.

Assam is best experienced through a homestay. Check Assam homestay for a recommendation.

When my younger brother was transferred to Guwahati, I was very upset as we had been living together in Delhi for 5 years. The parting was painful. Tears came out of my eyes and though Sachin tried to hold back his, I could see wetness in his eyes. Assam is far from Delhi and it was going to be a completely different milieu for him and hence, he was also skeptical. But as time passed, my little bro became so attached to the picturesque place that on his next transfer, he was not happy, though the place was near Delhi.

He had told me so much about the state that when it was time for our family trip, we chose to go to Assam and booked a homestay in Guwahati for the same. The day-long train journey was a little boring but as soon as we landed at the homestay, all monotony flew away. The loving hosts greeted us with a bright smile and served us excellent Assam Tea and within an hour we were ready for the sightseeing expedition.

Kamakhya Temple

A hallowed temple, it is devoted to Sati, wife of Lord Shiva. Tantric worshippers are known to frequent the Kamakhya Hill, from all over India and the place is said to possess healing powers. I too said prayers for the well-being of my dear ones.

Umananda Temple

Though not much into religion, my family was keen to visit this temple because it was in the middle of the mighty Brahmaputra, on the Peacock Island. The boat ferry from the Kachari Ghat to the Shiv Mandir is a blissful experience, as you can behold the scenic beauty, at a leisurely pace. The destination also serves glorious monumental delights and you feel truly blessed within the precincts.

Kaziranga National Park

After the temple visit, we were back to homestay and the next day was reserved for the wildlife safari in the famed Kaziranga National Park. Bursting with greenery, it enthralls you within seconds. As you enter inside, you can feel your heart pounding with excitement and why not? We were going to take elephant rides that provided heavenly views of the rich flora and fauna. The chirping of parakeets, the jubilant jungle fowls, the famed one-horned rhino; every sight soothed and stirred the mind.

Agnigarh

The hillock, in Tezpur, houses sculptures depicting the mythological love story of Aniruddh, grandson of Krishna and Usha, daughter of demon Banasura. The entire tale of love and war is presented through statues and it is an amazing sight with such a fairytale ambience that you will not want to leave it, no matter how much time you have spent. The enchanting view of the Kalia- Bhumura Bridge and the Tezpur town heightens the charm further.

Assam served us substantial scenic beauty, lively adventure, rejuvenating walks in romantic tea gardens, mouth-watering cuisine of Fish Tenga & rice and most of all blessings of the almighty. On parting, I was wishing if I could somehow get a transfer here.

Try a homestay the next time you are visiting Assam. A suggestion for a homestay in Guwahati would be Prabhakar’s.
